Why Study the Media Media Studies is designed to enable students to build up their knowledge of, the media. The central role of the media in our everyday lives will be explored, and the common sense assumptions that surround it challenged. The course enables students to understand how and why various media institutions operate, the representation or exclusion of some groups and issues by the media, and the consumption of particular media products by audiences.

Course Outlines

GCSE

Introduction activities: Forms and Conventions/ Audience/ Institutionsand representations. Practical activities (6-8 weeks)

FILM: TEXTUAL ANALYSIS (genre recognition) AND MARKETING GENRE

Assignment 1: Forms and conventions/ Institutions/ Audiences

REPRESENTATION: CRIME ON TELEVISION (6-8 weeks)

Assignment 2: Representations and Audiences

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY: marketing bands: 'synergy', pop music, How does the music industry work.

End of Year 10 exam: POP MUSIC (controlled conditions test)

Research for Children's Television Practical Production/ developing practical skills.

Assignment 3: Production and evaluation PRODUCTION: The title sequence for a new children's TV programme.

6-8 weeks to complete

ADVERTISING: CROSS MEDIA TOPIC- Mock Exam.

YOUTH MAGAZINES: Assignments 1& 2 a study of two Magazines. Tasks to cover assignments 1& 2 to improve grade. Work on advertising in relation to Cross Media Exam topic.

Final Deadline for coursework.
